My Story
When I was 19-years old, I was 6’-4” and only weighed 145 pounds! I was so skinny and weak that I couldn’t perform heavy manual labor without being thoroughly exhausted. I was studying to be an engineer and knew that I probably wouldn’t have to do heavy manual labor. However, my pride took over. I realized that I was a physical wreck!
During the summer vacation from college, I bought some dumbbells and barbells and set up a gym in my basement. I taught myself how to lift weights from reading muscle magazines and talking to some of my friends who had been weight training. In three months, I gained fifteen pounds of solid muscle! I was hooked! This experience was truly life changing.
Just lifting the weights and gaining muscle was not enough. I needed to understand how the process of weight training worked and how it added muscle. More importantly, I wanted to know the best methods to build muscle. I was on a quest to improve my body and fully understand the best way to achieve that goal.
Over the years, I studied all I could about the science, techniques and benefits of weight training. I became a “walking laboratory” by experimenting and applying many different weight training programs in my own training. I've been doing this for 45 years. As a result, I've gained valuable experience and knowledge about weight training and other aspects of physical fitness. In addition, I've maintained much of the same muscle that I had in my 20s and 30s. This enabled my body to maintain a fairly high metabolism and keep my bodyweight and body fat nearly constant over the last 10-20 years.
As I got into my 50s, I had to watch my body fat more. As a result, I learned more about sensible diet habits, cardiovascular exercise, supplements, and advanced weight training techniques to keep in better shape. This knowledge and experience has been valuable in developing my Personal Training philosophies and Fitness Consulting expertise.
